Arakawa

Arakawa is one of Tokyo's most atmospheric shitamachi (old downtown) wards — tightly packed, friendly, and refreshingly unmodernized. The nostalgic Toden Arakawa streetcar, Tokyo's last surviving tram line, threads through it, and the whole ward trades on a warm, neighborly, slower-paced charm that's increasingly rare in the capital.

Nippori is the gateway — a quick Skyliner ride to Narita Airport, the famous 'Fabric Town' textile district, and the edge of the much-loved Yanaka old-town quarter with its temples, cats, and sunset stairs. Nishi-Nippori, Machiya, and Minowa fill out the ward with honest, affordable residential streets and lively local shopping. It's not flashy and it never will be, but for renters and buyers who want authentic Tokyo, cheap rents, and excellent airport access, Arakawa punches well above its modest reputation.
