Edogawa
Tokyo's most international shitamachi, riverside and family-friendly in the far east, home to the city's vibrant Little India and unbeatable space-for-the-money.
Edogawa is Tokyo's eastern frontier, a flat, low-lying ward of rivers, canals, and one of the highest ratios of parkland and playgrounds in the city. It is, frankly, built for families, with generous green space, strong childcare support, and big, affordable apartments that simply don't exist in the center.
Its standout feature for foreigners is Nishi-Kasai, home to Tokyo's largest Indian community, a genuine Little India of IT professionals, authentic restaurants, grocers, and an international school, all grown up around the Tozai line's quick ride to the Otemachi financial district. It's one of the most successful and welcoming immigrant neighborhoods in Japan.
For renters and buyers, Edogawa is about space and value: large family homes, good parks, and easy central access via the Tozai and Toei Shinjuku lines, all at outer-ward prices. The trade-off is flood-risk awareness (much of the ward sits below sea level) and a long, flat sprawl. For families and international workers wanting room to breathe near the water, it's hard to beat.
Key neighbourhoods
- Nishi-Kasai
- Tokyo's Little India: a thriving South Asian community of IT families, superb curry houses, spice grocers, and an Indian international school, all a fast Tozai-line hop to Otemachi. The ward's international anchor.
- Funabori
- A tidy, convenient Toei Shinjuku-line residential pocket with a landmark observation tower and direct trains into central Tokyo. Quietly popular with families and commuters.
- Koiwa
- A bustling, slightly gritty JR Sobu-line district with deep shitamachi roots, lively shopping streets, and a growing immigrant presence. Cheap, energetic, and very local.
- Shinozaki
- The ward's eastern edge by the Edogawa river: low-rise, green, and spacious, with some of the area's most affordable detached homes. Suburban calm at the city's border.
- Kasai-Rinkai
- The waterfront jewel, home to Kasai Rinkai Park, its giant Ferris wheel, and a popular aquarium on reclaimed Tokyo Bay land. Edogawa's recreation and seaside-living showcase.
